This coin was released on 24 April 2023 as part of a commemorative range celebrating the upcoming Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023. Its obverse features a crowned version of the King's first definitive effigy, developed specially for this commemorative range.

The coronation of King Charles III was the first such event in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth (most countries of which share the same monarch) in 70 years; the previous coronation was in 1953 for Queen Elizabeth II, the mother of Charles III.

The obverse of the coin displays a crowned version of the first definitive portrait of King Charles III, which shows his crowned head facing left. On this portrait, the King wears the Tudor Crown - which was destroyed in the 1640s, but occasionally features on the effigies of British monarchs nevertheless.

Below the neck truncation in tiny letters, the artist's initials MJ (for Martin Jennings).

Around, the monarch's legend followed by the face value and date of issue: CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 200 POUNDS · 2023 ·. Translated from Latin, the legend means: Charles the Third, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith.

The reverse:

At centre, the reverse of the coin depicts the ornate Royal Arms of the United Kingdom on an oval shield, crowned with the Tudor Crown.

The standard variant (used outside of Scotland) has the shield quartered, depicting in the first and fourth quarters the three passant guardant lions of England; in the second, the rampant lion and double tressure flory-counterflory of Scotland; and in the third, a harp for Ireland.

The shield is surrounded by the Garter circlet (of the Order of the Garter), inscribed with the Order's motto in old French, HONI · SOIT · QUI MAL · Y · PENSE (Shame on him who thinks evil).

In the background, flora decorations incorporating the floral emblems of the four constituent parts of the United Kingdom: a rose for England, a thistle for Scotland, a daffodil for Wales, and a shamrock for Northern Ireland.

In a circle on the left, the monarch's cypher C III R (abbreviated from Charles III Rex - meaning in Latin "Charles the Third, King"), also crowned with the Tudor Crown. In a circle on the right, three intertwined letters C, for "Charles III", in a manner similar to the one C for Charles I and two intertwined Cs for Charles II, on the respective coinages of the king's predecessors.

Around the rim, the inscription · THE CORONATION OF KING CHARLES III 6 MAY 2023 ·.
