Like many other mints, the Royal Mint issues bullion coins in precious metals, having much higher intrinsic value than their face value. The one ounce (1 oz) gold coins are denominated as One Hundred Pounds (£100).

The coins are legal tender but are not intended for circulation. They are targeted at bullion investors or collectors who appreciate the special editions as pieces of art. The coins are typically "one-year" types usually issued in parallel with smaller denominations with the same reverse designs.

This coin is part of the Royal Arms range of bullion coins; a mainstay of British coinage for centuries, the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom is a majestic symbol of strength and majesty which represents the illustrious history of monarchy and heraldry in the United Kingdom.

It acts as the official Coat of Arms for the British monarch and its origins lie on the medieval battlefield where it would be seen on shields, banners and dress. It has evolved through the ages and is a true indicator of power, approval and duty.

First appearing on the 1983 Royal Arms one-pound coin, the iconic design by Eric Sewell has been reinterpreted by Timothy Noad for this bullion coin range by the Royal Mint, in a style reminiscent of the Queen's Beasts series. This design exemplifies the royal heritage which each monarch inherits during their reign and features the heraldic devices which have lasted through the ages, such as the Lion of England and Unicorn of Scotland supporting the shield.

The obverse of the coin displays the first definitive portrait of King Charles III, which shows his bare (uncrowned) head facing left.

Below the neck truncation in tiny letters, the artist's initials MJ (for Martin Jennings).

Around, the monarch's legend followed by the face value: CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 100 POUNDS ·. Translated from Latin, the legend means: Charles the Third, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith.

The obverse has a textured background ("guilloche" geometric pattern).

At centre, the reverse of the coin depicts the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom.

The standard variant (used outside of Scotland) has the shield quartered, depicting in the first and fourth quarters the three passant guardant lions of England; in the second, the rampant lion and double tressure flory-counterflory of Scotland; and in the third, a harp for Ireland. The crest is crowned with St Edward's Crown (the lion standing on it on the full version is not present on this coin).

In the greenery below, a thistle, Tudor rose and shamrock are depicted, representing Scotland, England and Ireland respectively. This armorial achievement comprises the motto, in French, of English monarchs, DIEU ET MON DROIT (God and my Right), which has descended to the present royal family, as well as the Garter circlet which surrounds the shield, inscribed with the Order's motto, in French, HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE (Shame on him who thinks evil), partly obscured by the shield.

The dexter (on the left) supporter is a crowned English lion; the sinister (on the right), a Scottish unicorn. According to legend a free unicorn was considered a very dangerous beast; therefore the heraldic unicorn is chained, as were both supporting unicorns in the royal coat of arms of Scotland, with a crown around its neck.

Above, interrupted by the cross on the crown, the date of issue 2023.

Around below, the metal content 1 oz FINE GOLD 999.9 (one ounce pure gold).

The artist's monogram TN (for Timothy Noad) is in relief at the base of the Coat of Arms, on the right side just under the letters DR of DROIT.

The reverse has a textured background of rays radiating out from the centre (a "sunburst pattern").
