The reverse of the coin shows a crowned young portrait of Victoria facing left, enclosed in stylised railway lines in the shape of her initial, V. Below the portrait, the letters "E PE" are the remnant of the words ONE PENNY, as on British postal stamps of the time which incorporated her portrait.
Above her head, divided by a star, are the anniversary dates: 1901 * 2001.
In the background, a representation of Crystal Palace - an iconic cast-iron and plate-glass building which housed the Great Exhibition of 1851. The designer's signature is inside an arch window in the lower right.
In the left field, on two lines the value and denomination 5 POUNDS.
