Founded by William the Conqueror almost 1,000 years ago, the Tower of London is one of the world’s most famous fortresses. Guarding the Tower and protecting the traditions and treasures held within its walls are the Yeoman Warders. The walls of the fortress may be steeped in history but it’s safe to say that many come to catch sight of, or maybe take a picture with, the famous Yeoman Warders in their iconic red uniforms.
These distinctive guards appear on the third coin in The Royal Mint’s series exploring the Tower of London. The Yeoman Gaoler takes pride of place on the coin, instantly recognisable in his Tudor bonnet with ceremonial axe.
The reverse of the coin depicts a Yeoman Warder (ceremonial guard) in a traditional uniform, holding a large battle axe; in the background, a plan of the walls of the Tower which is split over the four coins in the collection unifying their designs.
Below left, the mint mark of the Tower Mint features on an official UK coin for the first time - as a privy mark; the Royal Mint was housed inside the Tower itself, or on Tower Hill (just opposite the Tower) between 1279 and 1968.
Around above right, the inscription TOWER OF LONDON. Below left, the designer's initials GD (for Glyn Davies).
The date, face value and denomination are on the obverse.
