This commemorative £5 Crown-sized coin celebrates the Longest Reigning Monarch in the history of United Kingdom. On 9 September 2015 Queen Elizabeth II had ruled for more than 63 years and 216 days, which was the longest reign before her - that of Queen Victoria.

Excluding the £20, all the coins in the Longest Reigning Monarch coin range feature a new commemorative portrait by James Butler. This makes the UK £5 coin a modern rarity, as it is unusual in modern times for one artist to design both the obverse and reverse of a coin. In the portrait, The Queen is wearing the George IV State Diadem that features in the definitive portraits by Jody Clark and Raphael Maklouf.

Crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth IIfacing right. The Queen wears the "George IV State Diadem" - which she also has on the Raphael Maklouf and the Jody Clark portraits.

In small letters to the left of the head, the artist's initials JB (for James Butler).

Around right, the monarch's legend: ELIZABETH II · DEI · GRA · REG · F · D ·. Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the faith.

REVERSE:

Within a beaded circle, the reverse shows at its centre the Imperial State Crown, dividing the dates 1952 and 2015.

In small letters to the right of the crown, the artist's initials JB (for James Butler).

Around below, the inscription ONE CROWN.

This is the first time that a "Crown" denomination is actually written on a British coin. All the earlier crowns (including the extensive pre-decimal Crown series) had no denomination spelled out on them at all, or in the very rare exceptions when they did, it was written as FIVE SHILLINGS.
