The 2002 sovereign coins honour the Golden Jubilee (50th anniversary of the accession to the throne) of Queen Elizabeth II by reviving a modern version of a coin design last seen on half sovereigns of Queen Victoria in 1893. Instead of the renowned Benedetto Pistrucci engraving of St. George and the Dragon, the reverse of the 2002 gold sovereign carries the Royal Coat of Arms for only the second time in 115 years. The only previous occasion was for the 500th anniversary of the sovereign coin in 1989.

Within a wreath of laurels, the crowned Royal Arms of the United Kingdom. The shield is quartered, depicting in the first and fourth quarters the three passant guardant lions of England; in the second, the rampant lion and double tressure flory-counterflory of Scotland; and in the third, a harp for Ireland.

The designer's initials TN (for Timothy Noad) in monogram are in the right field.

The date 2002 is below the ribbon tying the wreath.

The obverse of the coins shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the "Fourth Portrait"). The Queen wears the "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty's grandmother) in 1947 - which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.

In small letters below the head, the artist's initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch's legend: ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA REGINA · FID · DEF. Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith.
