The edge lettering reads "DECUS ET TUTAMEN. ANNO REGNI VIII.", with cinquefoil or star stops.

Obverse: Head of Queen Victoria facing left wearing ribbon in hair; in small letters on neck truncation the artist's name W. WYON R.A.; around, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA; below, 1845.

Reverse: Within an open laurel wreath, crowned shield quartered with the arms of England (1 & 4), Scotland (2) and Ireland (3); around, BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:; below, a rose, thistle and shamrock united.
