The obverse of the coin shows the crowned bust of Queen Elizabeth II, facing right (her effigy known as the “Third Portrait”). The Queen is wearing the royal diadem which she wears on her way to and from the State Opening of Parliament, a pearl necklace and earrings.

Incuse in tiny letters on the neck truncation, the designer’s initials RDM (for Raphael David Maklouf).

Around, the monarch’s legend: ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA · REG · F · D. Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith.

The reverse depicts, within a beaded border, an illustration of the legend of St George as the slayer of the dragon.

St George is on horseback, advancing to right, wearing a helmet and chlamys (cape, or cloak) fastened in front by a fibula, and holding a sword. His left hand clutches the rein of the horse’s bridle, and he does not wear armour, other than on his lower legs and feet, with his toes bare. The saint’s horse appears to be half attacking, half shrinking from the dragon, which lies wounded by George’s spear and in the throes of death. The point of a spear is broken off in the dragon’s side; the shaft lays on the ground behind the horse.

In exergue, the date: 1993

In small letters below the head, the artist’s initials IRB (for Ian Rank-Broadley).

Around the effigy is the monarch’s legend: ELIZABETH · II · DEI · GRA REGINA · FID · DEF. Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith.

For 2023, Britannia is drawn in a chariot by mighty sea creatures, in a design reminiscent of the iconic Boadicea and Her Daughters statue next to Westminster Bridge.”

The obverse of the coin displays the first definitive portrait of King Charles III, which shows his bare (uncrowned) head facing left.

Below the neck truncation in tiny letters, the artist’s initials MJ (for Martin Jennings).

Around, the monarch’s legend followed by the face value and date of issue: CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 50 POUNDS · 2023 ·. Translated from Latin, the legend means: Charles the Third, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith.

The reverse shows, within a plain rim, the standing figure of Britannia, the female personification of Great Britain, riding in a chariot across the waves; the chariot is drawn by two mythical “seahorses”. Britannia holds a trident in her raised left hand, and supports a shield with the Union Jack (the flag of the United Kingdom) with her right hand. She wears a robe and a wreathed Corinthian helmet pushed back to reveal her face.
