Britannia as a symbol – the female personification of Great Britain – has been depicted on British coinage for centuries. The bullion series called Britannia has been issued in gold since 1987 and in silver since 1997; it has a “definitive” depiction – used on bullion coins (Brilliant Uncirculated grade), as well as “Britannia, the Changing Face of Britain” – a series of one-year design used on proofs made for collectors. In 2022, the Royal Mint also added this Celebration of Womanhood design to the series.

The Mint says about it:
“The exclusive editions of our Britannia coin return in 2022 with a beautiful design by the Italian artist and sculptor Sandra Deiana, who brings together three female figures representing the stages of womanhood.

For centuries, we have been making waves on UK coins, working with the most innovative artists of each age to re-imagine Britannia’s story for every new generation. In 2022, we are proud to release a new, exclusive design created by the talented Italian artist and sculptor Sandra Deiana. This is Sandra’s first collaboration with The Royal Mint and her vibrant, future-facing image portrays not one, but three female figures on the reverse of a Britannia coin for the first time. Skilled in traditional coin-making disciplines, Sandra created the coin relief for her Britannia design in clay. Then, state-of-the-art technology brought her vision to life, resulting in a worthy addition for collectors and investors.”

The reverse shows three women facing right. At centre is the standing figure of Britannia, the female personification of Great Britain; she wears lamellar armour and a crested Corinthian helmet, pushed back to reveal her face. On the left, an older woman. On the right, a young girl with a laurel wreath in her hair.

Around above left, the inscription BRITANNIA 2022. Around above right, the precious metal content: 2 OZ 999.9 FINE GOLD (two troy ounces of 99.99% gold). The face value is on the obverse.

The artist’s signature SD (for Sandra Deiana) are on the older woman’s shoulder, below the B in BRITANNIA.

The reverse depicts an illustration of the legend of St George as the slayer of the dragon, in its original 1817 interpretation.

St George is on horseback, advancing to right, wearing a helmet and chlamys (cape, or cloak) fastened in front by a fibula, and holding a broken lance. His left hand clutches the rein of the horse’s bridle, and he does not wear armour, other than on his lower legs and feet, with his toes bare. The saint’s horse appears to be half attacking, half shrinking from the dragon, which lies wounded by George’s spear and in the throes of death. The point of the lance is broken off in the dragon’s side.

In relief in the left part of the ground line, the artist’s initials B.P. (for Benedetto Pistrucci).

Surrounding the image, a Garter circlet inscribed with the Order of the Garter’s motto, HONI · SOIT · QUI · MAL · Y · PENSE · (from old French: Shame on he who thinks evil).

Reverse on the Double and Full Sovereign : St. George on horseback holding a short sword in his right hand, the horse rearing to right over a fallen dragon which has a broken lance in its chest; in exergue, the date, 1887 and the artist’s initials B.P.; the mint mark (if any) is in the ground above the middle of the date.

Reverse on the half sovereign: crowned and garnished shield, quartered with the arms of England (1 & 4), Scotland (2) and Ireland (3); around, the monarch’s legend BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:, the date 1887 is below divided by the bottom m of the shield.
