Within a beaded border, the reverse of the coin displays the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom. In its standard variant used outside of Scotland, the shield is quartered, depicting in the first and fourth quarters the three passant guardant lions of England; in the second, the rampant lion and double tressure flory-counterflory of Scotland; and in the third, a harp for Ireland. The crest is a statant guardant lion wearing St Edward’s Crown, himself on another representation of that crown standing on a knight’s helmet.

The dexter (right) supporter is a likewise crowned English lion; the sinister(left), a Scottish unicorn. In the ground below, a thistle, Tudor rose and shamrock are depicted, representing Scotland, England and Ireland respectively.

The motto of English monarchs, DIEU ET MON DROIT (God and my Right), which has descended to the present royal family, is in a ribbon below, while a Garter circlet which surrounds the shield is inscribed with the Order of the Garter’s motto, HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE (from old French: Shame on he who thinks evil).

The designer’s monogram TN (T over N, for Timothy Noad) is below right, above the ribbon.

Struck as part of a new coinage in gold and silver to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria, 1837-1887. The coins all shared a new “‘Jubilee” obverse of the Queen by Sir Joseph E. Boehm, adapted from his own Jubilee medal. The new obverse proved unpopular but was used until 1893 on the regular denominations. The Golden Jubilee 5 and 2 pounds denominations were only struck in 1887.

An eleven-coin specimen set from Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee year: 1887. This set contains four gold coins and seven silver coins, including a Five Pound, Two Pound, Sovereign, Half Sovereign, Crown, Double Florin, Half Crown, Florin, Shilling, Sixpence and Threepence, all dated 1887. Each piece bears Joseph Edgar Boehm’s Jubilee Portrait of Victoria, introduced in this year: the first coinage portrait specifically introduced to mark a jubilee. This year is also significant in that it saw the gold Five Pound coin enter circulation and the introduction of the second circulating gold Two Pound coin.

To celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the reverse features a rare departure from Pistrucci’s classic interpretation. For the 2012 Sovereign coin, the Royal Mint launched a competition to find a new design. The Royal Mint Advisory Committee eventually selected a design by the British sculptor Paul Day.

“I have chosen to opt for a romantic version of the St George and the dragon theme,” said Paul, “a medieval knight of Arthurian legend rather than a classical hero. I have given the dragon a more threatening attitude and size, so that it represents a real menace and not a weak foe.”

Paul deliberately left very little empty space, making the reverse as engaging as possible and very different from the obverse. As he says, “I have always been attracted to detail which requires a closer look to be unpicked and fully understood.”
