The British fifty pence (50p) coin – often pronounced as “fifty pee” – is a unit of currency equalling one half of a Pound Sterling. It is a seven-sided coin formed as an equilateral-curve heptagon, or Reuleaux polygon – a curve of constant width, meaning that the diameter is constant across any bisection. This shape, which was revolutionary at the time of its introduction, makes it easily distinguishable from round coins both by feel and by sight, while its constant breadth allows it to roll in vending machines.

The first UK Fifty Pence coin was issued in 1969 with the classic Britannia reverse design by Christopher Ironside, which was superseded in 2008 by the Matthew Dent design for circulation coins.The denomination is also extensively used to issue circulating commemorative coins.

Beginning in 2009, the Royal Mint started issuing 50 pence coins for collectors – such as this one – which are not meant to be released in circulation, so are classified as Non-Circulating Legal Tender (NCLT).

This commemorative fifty pence coin was issued to mark the 2022 Commonwealth Games, officially known as the XXII Commonwealth Games and commonly known as Birmingham 2022, scheduled to take place between 28 July and 8 August 2022.

The Commonwealth Games, often referred to as the Friendly Games, is an international multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was first held in 1930, and, with the exception of 1942 and 1946, has taken place every four years since then. The Commonwealth Games were known as the British Empire Games from 1930 to 1950, the British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954 to 1966, and British Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974.

The reverse of the coin shows in the upper half nine V shapes, representing (three times) the symbol of Commonwealth Games Federation, against a background of circles reminiscent of celebratory fireworks.

On the right, the designers’ initials N.P (for Natasha Preece).

On three lines below, the inscription BIRMINGHAM 2020 COMMONWEALTH GAMES.

Value and denomination, as well as the date of issue, are on the obverse.

The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (effigy known as the “Fifth Portrait”).

Running continuously around the effigy is the monarch’s legend and the date: ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D · 50 PENCE · 2022 ·. Translated from Latin: Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith, followed by the value and denomination in English and the year.

In small letters below the head, the artist’s initials J.C (for Jody Clark).

At centre, the seated figure of Britannia – the female personification of Great Britain, facing right; in a break with tradition, she is not helmeted. Her right hand cradles a trident resting on her right shoulder. She is holding an olive branch in her outstretched left hand. Her shield, propped up beside her, is oval and is decorated with the cross of the Union Jack.

A large lion rests at Britannia’s feet. In the background – sea, sailing boat and cliffs to the right; a large tree and curving olive branch to the left.

Around left and right, interrupted by the top of the olive branch, the inscription ONE OUNCE FINE GOLD BRITANNIA.

Below the exergue line, horizontally, the date of issue 2007. Exactly at the exergue line, at right, in tiny letters the designer’s initials CLB (for Christopher Le Brun).
