Struck as part of a new coinage in gold and silver to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria, 1837-1887. The coins all shared a new “‘Jubilee” obverse of the Queen by Sir Joseph E. Boehm, adapted from his own Jubilee medal. The new obverse proved unpopular but was used until 1893 on the regular denominations. The Golden Jubilee 5 and 2 pounds denominations were only struck in 1887.

The standard variant of the Coat of Arms (as used outside of Scotland) has the shield quartered, depicting in the first and fourth quarters the three passant guardant lions of England; in the second, the rampant lion and double tressure flory-counterflory of Scotland; and in the third, a harp for Ireland. The crest is crowned with St Edward’s Crown (the lion standing on it on the full version is not present on this coin).

The reverse shows St George as the slayer of the dragon; in Medieval knight’s armour and on horseback, he is shown driving the point of his lance into the head of a menacing dragon.

The date 2012 is around left.

St George is on horseback, advancing to right, wearing a helmet and chlamys (cape, or cloak) fastened in front by a fibula, and holding a sword. His left hand clutches the rein of the horse’s bridle, and he does not wear armour, other than on his lower legs and feet, with his toes bare. The saint’s horse appears to be half attacking, half shrinking from the dragon, which lies wounded by George’s spear and in the throes of death. The point of a spear is broken off in the dragon’s side; the shaft lays on the ground behind the horse.

In exergue, the date: 2013.
